October 1st, 2008

The new Cinergy S PCI and Cinergy S2 PCI HD from TerraTec are a great match to the SelfSat HD-compatible antenna we saw in July.

Both devices are PCI so at the moment Laptops are out of the picture, but they are a perfect addition to your home theatre PC and, as its name suggests, the Cinergy S2 PCI HD (pictured) supports HD broadcasts making it the obvious choice.

Solwise HomePlug And SlingLink Put To The Test

September 24th, 2008

I have been working on a review of the SlingLink for a while and it struck me that it would be best to have a similar HomePlug device for comparison and interoperability testing. I managed to obtain a Solwise HomePlug PL-85PE with which to do just this. What follows are my findings.

HomePlug is a networking solution that allows you to use your existing household power cables as network cables. To establish a network connection between one room and another you simply plug a HomePlug compatible device into each room and it just works.

You can use HomePlug devices directly between a cable modem (I used my Virgin Media, ex NTL one to test this) and a router, between two computers, between a games console and a router or any other situation in which you would ordinarily use a long network cable.

Noise.io Combats Claims Of Vaporware

September 24th, 2008

The guys over at Noise.io have received a lot of flak for their bold move to delay the application in favour of packing in features and doing some serious re-structuring of their synthesis engine in order to support them.

Apparently they’ve received complaints by email that their application is a scam and/or vaporware and have responded in kind by offering a couple of audio demonstrations for download at their website.

Whilst the audio demonstrations would certainly not constitute definitive proof of Noise.io’s existence to naysayers they’re a nice thing to have at this stage.

We’re fast running out of days left in September, so I can only wish the Noise.io developers all the best and hope they manage to crank it out within a week. If not, it’s no loss, I would rather see a fully functional, polished and finished Noise.io later rather than risk a buggy, incomplete, early release killing support for the project and souring opinions of what could turn out to be one of the best iPhone applications, certainly for anyone musical, ever.

Baroque - Wii

September 20th, 2008

nullBaroque, Developed by Sting Entertainment and published by Rising Star Games, was originally released on the Sega Saturn back in 1999, but has been updated and re-released for the Wii and PS2.

Suitable for ages 12 and up, get ready to get Emo! Close the curtains; part the side fringe and stop smiling… we’re about to get serious!

The game is a dark and sinister RPG that takes place following a world-altering cataclysm called the Blaze that took place on May 14, 2032. The world, now existing in a twisted state, is populated by creatures that were once human but that have lost their hearts and minds to the Baroques inside them. (Hence the clever name!) You play the Protagonist, a young man who carries the burden of a sin he cannot recall. He’s lost his memories and cannot speak.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Xbox 360

September 19th, 2008

Review by Johnus Maximus

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Xbox 360 box artThe long anticipated new Star Wars title from LucasArts has finally arrived. Assuming the role of Darth Vaders secret apprentice, this third-person platform/adventure game fills some of the plot gap between the third and fourth films and will see you unleashing the power of the force like never before

Released on September 19th 2008, The Force Unleashed is developed and published by LucasArts, and is also available on PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii and DS. Despite being short, the game is a lot of fun and offers a well presented cinematic experience that no Star Wars fan can afford to miss out on.

Rockin’ The SteelSeries SL Mouse Mat

September 18th, 2008

I was a non-believer when it came to gaming-grade mousing services. Recently, however, I noticed the SteelSeries Ikari (which has become my mouse of choice) takes a certain degree of pressure before it will move on the surface of my desk. This meant that trying to move the mouse a single pixel (which I have to do from time to time) or with great precision was hampered by a juddering effect that made it frustrating.

I had happened across some gaming grade surfaces whilst browsing the SteelSeries website and decided it would be a good idea to give them a try. I requested the SteelSeries 5L and SteelSeries SP.

Creative X-Fi Notebook Sound Card And Wireless Receiver

September 17th, 2008

Notebooks are quickly coming around to the wonders of high fidelity audio output, with Optical Digital/Analogue combination jacks prevalent at the moment and, with gaming on laptops being an absurd pipe dream, no real clear need for anything much better than cheap and cheerful integrated audio.

Creative have other plans, however, in the form of their Creative X-Fi Notebook Sound Card and Wireless Receiver allowing the streaming of X-Fi high fidelity audio to speakers without needing to tether yourself.
